Sep 10, 2026

In August 2026, Xiamen University’s research vessel Tan Kah Kee (RV TKK) made its first call at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, during its latest visit to Malaysia as part of the first leg of the XMU at Sea Undergraduate Training Cruise. The vessel hosted a public open day at Kota Kinabalu Port, becoming the first Chinese research vessel to open to the public in East Malaysia.

The opening ceremony was attended by Xinglong Zhu, Consul General of China in Kota Kinabalu; Ruifang Wang, President of Xiamen University Malaysia; and Jordan Jude Ellron, Assistant Minister of the Sabah State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. Following the ceremony, more than 100 guests from government, universities, media, community organizations, and Chinese enterprises boarded the vessel for a tour.

Over the three-day open day, more than 700 visitors came aboard. They explored the vessel’s laboratories and working deck, learned about marine research equipment including multi-nets, box corers, gravity corers, and CTDs, and took part in hands-on marine science activities. Visitors also learned about Tan Kah Kee, the founder of XMU and a renowned philanthropist.

The open day offered visitors a closer look at oceanographic research while fostering greater interest in marine science and ocean conservation.

Following the event, RV TKK continued its voyage, carrying 33 students and faculty members from 13 universities and research institutions in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Hong Kong. The vessel also hosted another public open day during its subsequent call at Port Klang, Malaysia, drawing nearly 750 visitors on board.

Through science, education, and engagement, the vessel will continue to champion ocean exploration and global collaboration for a shared maritime future.
